It often presents a challenge for instructors to produce visually effective learning materials. The process of selecting colors, fonts, and images can sometimes take an excessive amount of time to finalize. Considering that the time allocated for academic staff to develop content is extremely limited, what is the solution?

As an experienced content developer, my mantra is simple: materials that are simple and concise are easy to understand! Let's begin:

Essential Design Principles for Online Teaching & Learning (Part 2)

Choosing & Applying the Font Theme

Establish a 2-Font Theme - Create a font theme consisting of two types, which are easily referenced online. The basic approach is to choose one main font for titles and another for body text. Alternatively, using a single font type for both purposes is also an option.

Choosing a font is crucial: select one that is clear and easy to read!

Standardize Font Sizing - Determine standard sizes for titles, body text, labels, captions, and navigation elements. This is essential for establishing a feeling of overall uniformity. You may also set a size range, for example: Title = 20–28 point; Body Text = 16–18 point.

Gather User Feedback - Collect user feedback on their comfort and preference levels for the chosen font theme. Evaluate responses and make necessary adjustments.

Develop Your Signature Style - By implementing these practices repeatedly, you will eventually find your favorite font styles, which contributes to efficiency in design.
